If you’re expecting or have just had your little one, congrats! This is such an important time that goes by in the blink of an eye. That’s why you’ve started to look for the best Pittsburgh newborn photographer (or in your own local area).

It can be difficult because there isn’t just one! There are so many talented photographers in Pittsburgh, and it’s hard to know which one is the right fit for you. The truth is, there are many Pittsburgh photographers that would do an amazing job. So how do you narrow it down?

Look for experience

Has your photographer been doing this for a long time? Do they specialize in newborn photography? It’s important to think about this because someone who has been photographing babies for 10 years is going to have lots of experience not only with posing and getting amazing pictures, but also with taking care of your little one during the session. They’ll see signs when they need to be fed or might just be done overall. Less experienced photographers will probably struggle to know how to handle a newborn easily and may not have a workflow down. We’ve all started somewhere- and that’s ok! But if you don’t want to have to worry about these things, looking at experience is key.

Do you love their work?

This is a big one. Not all photographers have the same style when it comes to posing, editing, or even props. One thing that can help you determine if you like a photographer’s style is by looking through their galleries on their website. Do you like the colors in most of the photos? Are the whites too bright? Are the images too dark? Do you like the props you’re seeing? If you love everything about every image, then you’ve probably found the right photographer for you! If you find yourself saying you would want to change a lot of things, then maybe it’s time to move to the next photographer you were thinking of using.

Try to keep in mind that many photographers have built up their collection of props. If you’re hoping for something super specific and special, it’s important to find a photographer in your second trimester or earlier so they have time to look for these items, or they can at least let you know whether it’s possible and if there is an additional fee for buying extra props they may not already have.

Do you trust them?

This might come down to experience, but maybe you know someone who recommended their photographer to you. That’s always super helpful! But say you don’t know them – how can you tell? Looking for reviews can help ease your mind. Does your photographer have reviews on google? Maybe they have customer quotes or kind words featured on their website? These will usually give you a good idea of what to expect.

Most newborn photographers will have an “about” section on their website. This is a great way to maybe get to know your photographer.

Lastly, reach out and ask them to give you a call or request to visit their studio. I’ve had clients that simply wanted to Facetime to get to know me a little bit before arriving for their session so they could feel confident in their decision. You’ll probably immediately get an idea of the photographer’s personality by how the speak to you.

Lastly, cost.

While we may not want this to be a determining factor, it most certainly is. Maybe explore some newborn photographers in your area to get an idea of what the usual session price is. Be prepared to spend more if the photographer has years of experience, has their own studio that is well stocked with backdrops and props, and offers beautiful keepsakes in addition to digital images.

Sometimes, this may just not be in your budget. However, if you’re looking early enough then you also have time to save if newborn pictures are something you really value. A lot of photographers offer payment plans, too, which makes getting newborn pictures so much more affordable. You can also ask if they have any specials at the moment.

Try to keep in mind that photos are something that are going to last not only your lifetime, but for lifetimes after.
